My Best Friend’s Wedding : A dress dilemma

It has been 8 and a half weeks since my last post, though it feels more like 2! The targets I set myself last time were:

Catering
Bridesmaids
Groomsmen
My dress

(What was I thinking?!)

Catering

Catering first, well we’re much closer with that now. As we are using different suppliers for all the different elements of the catering, it hasn’t been simple to pull it all together, but we’ve started to make the final bookings for everything, so catering gets an almost tick.

Bridesmaids

Next up, the bridesmaids – we bought their dresses! Whoop! I had seen a dress some time ago and fallen in love with it. But it was just an image on pinterest with no back link, so I couldn’t find anywhere to buy it. However, one of my very clever bridesmaids, Michelle, spotted an almost identical dress from a high street store for a bargain price (all will be revealed!)

I snapped them up and they’re perfect! Just shoes, accessories and flowers to sort for them, but that should be easy now… (famous last words?!)

Groomsmen

That brings me to the groomsmen. Now that we’ve sorted the bridesmaids, it seemed more obvious what to do with the boys. The suits aren’t on order yet, but Gavin’s found an online store that he wants to order from, so once the price is agreed (and the boys have decided what size their waistlines will be in October!), we can get those ordered too.

The dress

Finally, the big one, my dress. This one is still firmly on the list unfortunately. A lot of that is due to a lack of time for ‘trying on’ which can be mainly attributed to the fact that we bought a house! Oh my word, yes it’s true. Exactly 4 months before the wedding, we signed on the dotted line and handed a heart-breaking amount of money over to a solicitor. We now await the keys and once they arrive, we will have even less time to think about the wedding, as we knock down walls and move doorways around… Was this planned? Of course it wasn’t! I know what you’re thinking, they must be crazy! Well, yes. Yes we actually are.

The dress story so far…

I have been to several bridal shops with my maids and mother, and I’ve tried on pretty much every shape and style of dress you can imagine, including those that I knew I wouldn’t like just for confirmation, but I still haven’t found ‘my dress’. I think I need a ‘Frankenstein’ dress, made up of the bits I like from several dresses, as I’m not sure mine exists yet.

Here are some photos that Debs took from one shop (they don’t all allow you to take pictures) of dresses that, although beautiful, aren’t ‘my dress’:

Next steps? Well, I’m going to try to draw (or get someone who can actually draw, to draw) what I think is my dress, and take it to a seamstress (with 15 weeks to go, I need one who can sew really fast!) Otherwise, time being of the essence, I think I will have no choice but to find one off-the-peg, or perhaps second-hand but in my size!

Targets for next time? Well, all of the above really! My dress being an obvious priority. Plus, the invitations should have been sent out and a lot of the décor will hopefully have started coming together by then.

See you in a few (manic) weeks! :)
